                     Small changes . . . big results

Below are just a few of the many responses of N.E.W. LIFE program participants, who with much delight have shared their surprise about how
their bodies and desires change within a few short weeks.  These very real changes occur easily and surprisingly soon, not because of any all-or-nothing dietary changes, and not because of any “bad foods” that you are told must be eliminated from your diet.  You simply begin to add the nutritious foods that are missing (i.e., just one carrot a day for a week, one piece of fruit, or one more grain)--something that is easy for you to do, something of your own choosing that you might actually like, then the "fluff" foods begin to get crowded out as you give your body what it was created to live on, and your body, tastes and desires change!

                           Some N.E.W. LIFE participants share . . .

“I had a steak the other night--I couldn’t sleep all night.” A pastor, about week 6.

“I ate 6 ounces of a 12-ounce steak and I couldn’t eat anymore.”  Greeley professor, week 6.  (At the beginning of the 10-week program this gentleman told me he did not see how he was going to be able to “do the program” since he ate out 6 times/week and often ate 12-to-16-ounce steaks.  I assured him that he could apply N.E.W. LIFE to his lifestyle and encouraged him to just make the changes that he could.)

“I used to eat a high-fat breakfast in Estes Park every Saturday morning.  This Saturday morning I had the same breakfast and I didn’t feel good all afternoon.”  Fort Collins Youth Clinic nurse, mid-program.

“I used to eat hot dogs every day.  I had a hot dog the other day and it sat with me for 5 hours.” Greeley, Colorado school district administrator, week 5.

“I went on my Friday night binge with my grad student friends.  I don’t like how I felt . . . I don’t want to do that anymore.”  Graduate student Colorado State University, week 6.

“I have to talk with you, I feel like I am eating so much food.” (I replied, OK, I can work with you.  Did you lose any weight this week?)  “Yes, 5 pounds!  Although I am struggling with eating ‘so much’ food, it's the first weekend in 10 years that I didn't binge!”Young woman with body image/food disorder, week 3

“Thank you.  The French fries made me sick.”  Week 10 food diary, same young woman above.  (French fries are on the Eating Plan--never told her not to eat a french fry).

“What have you done to me?  I grew up in Texas and used to eat ribs all the time.  I had a plate of ribs the other day and got sick.  Can’t wait to come home and have a good garden-fresh salad.” Husband of a N.E.W. LIFE Dietitian during 2-week Navy duty.  (Note:  never counsel a spouse--just rinse the meat and add more beans to the Texas chili over time!)

“My husband’s cholesterol went down!”  N.E.W. LIFE program participant who lost weight, and called a year after the program was over.

“I just had to call you and tell you--I lost 17 pounds while you were gone--just the way you said--
1-2 pounds/week.  The program works!”
