Nutrition Bite 5

The South Beach Diet and Itching Ears

Welcome to Nutrition Bites
with Registered Dietitian Diane Preves, developer of the 10-week N.E.W. LIFE program,
author of
Restoring the Blessing and Diet Book Reviews.
“A baked potato in midafternoon practically guarantees that you’ll be starving for carbs by dinner.  You’d be better off having a small ice cream or even a dark chocolate bar instead of that baked potato.”  p. 54
And a South Beach dieter comment in the book:
I used to eat a lot of carrots. . . So I was shocked to learn that carrots have so much sugar in them.  You don’t realize that those carrots, or those onions, just turn right into sugar that gets stored in your body as fat.”  p. 60
There are a lot of other foods to be concerned about.  My guess is the reader is not overweight because she eats too many carrots or potatoes.

She continues:

“Lately I actually gained a few pounds back. . .because I cheated with those nuts. . . you don’t realize that there’s sugar in nuts. . .”  p. 60
Can you imagine how unpalatable carrots, onions, and nuts would be without any sugar?  God has Provided us with a variety of good-tasting foods to enjoy.  South Beach Dieters avoid many health-supporting, disease-preventing foods while eating excessive amounts of meat on this newest version of the high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet which produces quick weight-loss through ketosis.  While the debate about whether ketosis is harmful continues, what is not debatable are the reports of high cholesterol, heart disease, gall bladder disease, bone loss, and kidney stones which result.  And all this for only temporary weight-loss with the predictable weight-regain.

Don’t get me wrong, I eat meat and enjoy ice cream too.  But shame on Dr. Agatston for “tickling the ears” of a meat-indulging, ice cream-loving readership looking for the magic bullet to their weight problems.

“For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine.  Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.  They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”
2 Timothy 4:3-4
There is no shortage of outrageous dietary advice.  For example, in his wildly popular book The South Beach Diet, Dr. Agatston writes:
