Nutrition Bite 10

Another Kind of Heart Disease

Welcome to Nutrition Bites
with Registered Dietitian Diane Preves, developer of the 10-week N.E.W. LIFE program,
author of
Restoring the Blessing and Diet Book Reviews.
Americans are suffering an epidemic of lifestyle diseases, largely a result of eating an unhealthy diet in a “land of plenty”.  While cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer on a long list of “lifestyle” diseases, I have noticed another type of “heart disease” over the past 20 years.  Over 50% of every class I teach has an out-of-balance or addictive relationship with food fueled by underlying emotional pain.

Whether improved energy and health, prevention of disease, or weight-loss is the goal, the advice is the same:

Jeremiah 17:9 says:
“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.  Who can understand it?”
So go with God.  He will not miss a step and the end result will be freedom around food, not just “getting better” with setbacks.   God is Faithful to heal just as Jesus healed everyone he touched.

And finally, enlist the support of a spouse, trusted friend, Christian counselor, pastor or                  N.E.W. LIFE program.
“So whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”  I Corinthians 10:31

Feed yourself well, especially if the goal is weight-loss.  Low-calorie diets result in low blood sugar which exacerbates craving and problem behaviors.  When your body thinks food is scarce it will want to have all that it can the next time it is available.
Turn to God for His leading, revealing and Healing.  You may not be able to label the underlying pain and, in fact, will probably mislabel it.  But God knows everything that has happened and He knows our heart better than we do.
